Maintaining Your Coaching Mindset While Coaching Across Difference

When our sense of status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness and fairness are threatened we can get knocked out of the coaching mindset.
By working with David Rock’s SCARF model of social threats, building somatic awareness and working with mindfulness techniques, we can increase our ability to manage ourselves as coaches, enabling us to maintain trust and safety when working with clients who hold different identities, experiences, values and beliefs than our own.
As a result of this session, participants will be able to notice when they are having a fight, flight or freeze reaction to client’s story or situation, and manage that reaction within the moment, allowing them to quickly return to the coaching mindset and sustain an environment of trust and safety for their client.
This presentation focuses on helping coaching maintain a mindset that is open, curious, flexible and client-centered (2), when working across difference, so that coaches can cultivate trust and safety with clients who have different identities, environments, experiences, values and beliefs (4).
Participants will learn about:
- Understand SCARF model
- Identify early somatic warnings of SCARF threat and fight, flight, freeze reactions
- Learn simple mindfulness techniques to increase self-regulation
